VBL CUP OPENING WEEKEND

By Dakota Gray

Summer has officially arrived in Venice.

The 2026 Veniceball season tipped off on the beach's iconic blacktop with packed sidelines, electric plays and eight teams battling for the first weekly VBL Cup. By the end of the afternoon, Timeless stood alone atop the bracket, surviving a gauntlet of contenders to claim the opening championship in what promises to be a fiercely contested summer on the Venice Beach blacktop.

Here’s how week one went down:

IKARO vs. Westside War

Every Veniceball season welcomes new challengers, and this year it was IKARO stepping into the spotlight.

Unfortunately for the newcomers, their first assignment couldn't have been much tougher.

Across the court stood Westside War, one of last season's breakout teams, returning with its entire core intact. That continuity showed from the opening possession as Westside War moved the ball with confidence and capitalized on every IKARO mistake.

While IKARO flashed moments of  promise throughout its debut, Westside War's chemistry proved to be the difference, allowing the veteran squad to control the game and secure a 16-9 opening-round victory.

The loss may sting, but IKARO showed enough potential to make them a team to keep an eye on as the summer unfolds.

Timeless vs. LA in a Min

Timeless didn't take long to make an impression during the 2026 season.

Facing a shorthanded LA in a Min squad, Timeless started slowly before quickly finding its rhythm. Once the offense began clicking, the momentum completely shifted.

Leading the charge was No. 2 overall draft pick Erik Weekz, who announced his arrival to Veniceball in spectacular fashion. Weekz buried three straight three pointers to blow the game open, earning Player of the Game honors and leading Timeless to a 24-15 win and a trip to the semifinals.

BBall Junkies vs. ALOC

BBall Junkies reminded everyone why they're one of the league's most respected teams.

Taking on a talented ALOC squad, the Junkies leaned on the gritty identity that has made them a perennial contender. Their defensive pressure never let up, their rotations stayed disciplined and every possession showed why they are a name well known around Venice.

The result was a convincing 19-12 victory and another reminder that BBall Junkies remain one of the must-watch teams this summer.

Mecca vs. Hoopbus

If one game of the afternoon captured everything Veniceball is about, this was it.

Former champions Mecca squared off against Hoopbus in the day's most entertaining matchup, delivering nonstop energy throughout.

Some of Venice’s best players put on a show as Crafty and Juice went bucket-for-bucket in a back-and-forth battle. But the moment everyone will remember came when Vieux soared over The Buffet for a thunderous poster dunk that sent the Venice crowd into a frenzy.

The highlight instantly became one of the early plays of the summer, helping propel Mecca to an 22-19 victory and into the semifinals while serving as an emphatic reminder that Veniceball is officially back.

Semifinal: Timeless vs. Westside War

With a trip to the championship on the line, Timeless and Westside War delivered one of the day's tightest contests.

Juju took over inside, controlling the paint on both ends of the floor with timely finishes, rebounds and defensive stops whenever Timeless needed them most.

Westside War refused to go away and had one final opportunity to steal the game in the closing seconds. Kaison's last-second jumper looked destined to fall before rattling in and out, allowing Timeless to escape with a dramatic 16-14 result and punch its ticket to the final.

Semifinal: Mecca vs. BBall Junkies

Mecca looked like a completely different team in the semifinals.

Fueled by the arrival of Hezigod, Mecca exploded out of the gates, racing to 24 points in near-record time and forcing BBall Junkies into an up-tempo game they couldn’t keep pace with.

The contest quickly turned into a transition showcase, where Mecca's collection of talent proved too much for BBall Junkies' defensive identity to overcome.

The 24-19 victory set up a championship showdown between the day's two best teams.

Championship: Timeless vs. Mecca

TIMELESS 21 x MECCA 18

Then there were two.

After a long day of on-court battles, two teams remained, but only one could end the weekend holding the Cup and leave the beach as the team to beat this summer.

In a championship filled with momentum swings and timely shot-making, Timeless once again delivered when it mattered most.

After Mecca mounted a late comeback attempt, Timeless answered with clutch baskets down the stretch. Erik Weekz continued his impressive debut with another pair of timely shots, while Juju controlled the game's biggest possessions to help close the door.

When the clock ran out, Timeless had secured a 21-18 win, surviving the tournament to claim the first Veniceball Cup of the 2026 season.

With opening weekend now in the books, the message around Venice is already clear: every Sunday will bring new contenders, new highlights and another chance for someone to take the Cup.

Timeless walked away with the first Cup of the summer, but nothing is settled in Venice. The blacktop doesn’t crown champions off one weekend. It demands consistency. The target is now on their backs, and the real test is only beginning.

For one week, though, the crown belongs to Timeless.
