What a day it was for the VBL’s season finale which took place this past Saturday, September 3rd,
2011 at the legendary Venice basketball courts! We’ve added another page in the history books as the
day was filled with festivities and fun for family and friends. The KVBL finished off its last day of camp,
the Legends’ teams proved they haven’t lost their touch and a team of All-Star players from past and
present VBL seasons played against Hollywood Hoops. The lovely ladies of Venice showed off their skills
on the court during the 2nd Annual Bikini Basketball Game and the Slam Dunk contest was a smash with
5’7” Rodrick a.k.a King Small winning first place with his off –the- backboard -between –the- legs dunk
(East Bay)!

Saturday’s main attraction concluding the day’s excitement took place between The Mean Ones
and (three time champions) Venice All-Stars. Both teams faced off against each other to claim the
title as the 2011 VBL Champions and to take home the VBL trophy hand-crafted by upcoming Venice
Beach artist Flewnt.

Adrenaline was pumping right out of the gate as the All-Stars surged past the Mean Ones in
the first half. With a score of 26-43 going into the third quarter it was #32 Ian a.k.a. “High Energy”
and Mouth Piece’s defensive tenacity which kept the Mean Ones in the game during the second half.
Leading scorer #45 Zach Andrews’ scored 8 of his 24 points in the 4th quarter and as usual assisted Mean
Ones’ come back with numerous dunks.

Street ball legend #1 “Sick Wit It” led the Venice All-Stars with style and foot work as he
continually crossed defenders up. #12 Tim a.k.a. “Spiderman,” #8 “The Beast,” and #0 “The Mute” were
ultimately unstoppable. Although Mouth Piece was able to shut down The Beast in the Fourth Quarter it
was too little too late. Mean Ones defense held the All-Stars to just 8 points in the Fourth Quarter as
they began to play catch up with a 20 point scoring streak. The effort was to no avail for the Mean Ones
though. As the final buzzer sounded Venice All-Stars held the lead at 66-60.

Receiving the Championship title for the 4TH year in a row, the Venice All-Stars will officially
continue their reign as the Kings of the VBL court until next summer. Who will be able to defeat the All-
Stars next season? Stay tuned as we bring you more upcoming events hosted by the VBL during the off
season and keep an eye out for the 2011 VBL DVD featuring this season’s highlights! For the love of the
game we will remain LA’s street ball authority on and off the court.

The counter culture of Venice Beach expands during the summer season as tourists and locals gather to observe the spectacle that is the Venice Basketball League.  As the epicenter of Los Angeles’s street ball authority, the Venice courts are the embodiment of a Baller’s dream. Showcasing talent and inspiring youth, Venice’s progression is recognized worldwide. With teams drafted from all walks of life and from every corner of the world, VBL’s global community draws a melting pot of fans and players.

Positivity, activity and well- being is epitomized by the VBL on a weekly basis during the competitive summer games and the free kids camp, known as the KVBL, that is offered at 9am on Sunday mornings. Every kid is given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities on the beach, enabling their athletic and intellectual aspirations to flourish under the sun. The KVBL’s fundamental intention has been to provide an encouraging and educational atmosphere for the kids to exercise and improve their many talents in front of a supportive audience free of charge.  Kids from all areas in LA are given the resources to manifest their athletic and intellectual capabilities with the only requirement being to bring a positive attitude. Fostered by the collective love for the game and sustained by the influence of community involvement, VBL has organically established itself as a true Hooper’s haven.

- UNITED NATIONS VS SKID ROW AMBASSADORS >> This match up has had numerous consecutive overtime games and known to be some of the flashiest most entertaining teams in the league!

- VENICE ALL STARS VS “WHITE COLLARS” >> The 3 X defending champions are going against  the corporate boys that were all amazing student athletes and showed their worth @ The VBL tryouts.

As you know Young Flip, Prime, Gio & Ansom are all on the Los Angeles team and play in the VBL. Prime and Gio were dunking all over New York and defeated them in style. We proved to have a lot more heart & physical ability even though they injured 2 of our best players.

The highlight of the day had to be our kids clinic/game prior to TPG where the youth truly showed their passion and put on a great show. Check out some of the best moments!

The Venice Beach “Ninjas” are doing some serious damage in their first season in The West Coast Pro Basketball League. With a 3-1 start, they are heading to Santa Barbara to play against the champs this Saturday the 30th. The game will be televised on local networks.

Great time we had today for our Fund Raiser. Special Thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting the movement. It was great to get all the boys together for the holidays and relive a bit of the VBL summer feel…. plus all the new comers… We did not raise much money but were able to send a bunch of kids to witness an other amazing win for the Clippers. Keep it coming.. Blake Griffin is a BEAST.. No one is dunking on people like him in the NBA today.. That is what fans come to see… Join the movement!

I took the time to sit down and talk further with Ron Beals last Saturday to find out a bit more about this character that is at the courts every single day. You might recognize this man the White Man can’t Jump movie or from the Converse commercial or if you came by the courts anytime in the last 45 years. This man grew up in Chicago and witness the birth of Basketball. He started his career at Loyola University in chicago 1960,  he was known to be a pure shooter. One game the clock was running down and a man was guarding him and he took a Jump Shot and it went in…The coach called a time out “What are you thinking son of jumping when you shoot”" I wasn’t” Ron responded and this is how he became one of the pioneer of the jump shot because at the time it was all running shot . Also at the time Dunking was outlawed by the NBA as he called “No Blacks Allowed”. “Nothing But Anglos”. He played against Sweet Water Clifton and Will Chamberlain at NorthWestern University pick up games and they would be dunking all over the place. He recalls when Will was offered a million dollars to play for the Globe Trotters and was probably one of the first Black Millionaire in the history.

Beals was noticed his first year in college after he transfered to Boise what became Boise State and was offered a job by the Harlem Clowns. He played for the Harlem Clowns and Al Pullins. Tour all over the US. They played in bull rings, parking lots, anywhere they could put baskets and charge admition. Ron went on and played for the Chicago Comets would tour and kill every college team. He was a guard, there was no Point Guards at the time. When i asked him what was the best performance he had he responded that he was not interested in individuality and that is was all about the team. In the summer time the outdoor tournaments on 41st in Chicago where mosty college players he said, the players did not have the “what if i get injured mentality”. He says that the 80′s was the Best competition he witness in Venice.  Players from The Rockets, The hawks, Michael Cage would come and play regularly. It was great time when Ken Hicks was hosting his Summer showdown games up to the point when Kobe was injured in the 90′s .

Ron has a degree in photography. He was born veggitarian and never had the desire to eat meat. He would trade his steak for patatoes to his teamates after basketball games so all the guys would make sure to sit next to him.

He speaks with great pride about his sister Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) and his daughter who is featured in the Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas. He has now been living on the beach in Santa Monica for 30 years and rides his bike to Venice Beach every day. The man is 78  and is in optimal shape, he keeps the legend of Venice Courts alive and is not going ANYWHERE.

I got the call this morning about taking part of a photo shoot for my friend Salim. Today is going to be a good productive day i told myself ,… got the boys on the phone and said let’s do this thing…

I was told Eva Longoria will be star of the show this afternoon. So i picked up the phone and called my three favorite basketball people and asked if they would let me borrow their backyard for a basketball shoot. One was already rented, the second was fine by it as long as i would have a spot for him on my team this summer. So i was like great that’s done we will have a great time in his house. 10 am that was done, then i decided to call my buddy James Goldstein to get some inspiration for the summmer since he is only around the city when the lakers are playing at home. We spoke for a while and then told him about Eva and he said she was his friend and suggested we could have the shoot in his home. It was much more than i could ask for, the biggest fan of the NBA, also one of the most stylish person in the world invited us to make history on his home. As if our network was not strong enough, the fit model happened to be a friend of mine from Venice and the stylish had met my brother a week before in Berlin and recognized me right away… What a small world and what a team we pulled together in less than 24 hours…

I am not currently allowed to reveal the nature of the photo shoot but here is a glimpse of it behind the scene… Just know that it will be published in one of the top high fashion magazine. Stay tuned…

The day started 7am with the KVBL. We had a bus load of kids from South Central to join the celebration. Special thanks to Kristen from Sidewalk Cafe for donating the excellent grapes and strawberries. They were well needed since our Chef BeLive was out of town. Leilain and Nicole were here to cover and make excellent smoothies and salads for the kids. As usual we started with fundamental basketball drills, footwork, went into some body structural alignment, beach run, parcour threw the kids playfround, 3on3 and 5on5 set of games and finish off with Yoga and a healthy lunch of course. Big thank you to Katrina who came with a bus load full of kids from  South Central and for making a difference in kids lives.

We had two new teams that were introduced to The VBL this week, Venice Heat (LAFD) and The Bartenders. It was a nice opening game with the Scratch Academy warming up with some fresh beats. These guys always come with the best sound and the freshest DJ’s.

We proceeded with the Free Agents VS Kill the Hype game where ZigZag came late and stole the show with some dazzling tricks and great finishes.

We moved on to our 3rd game with United Nations VS Hollywood Hoops rivalry game. This game made it to over time with Ladies Man being the sharp shooter of the day and led his team to victory.

The most anticipated game of the day was The Mean Ones VS Team Advantage who took the Belt from the champs last week. The Mean Ones played hard and put on the show but the fundamentals size and power of Advange Basketball was no match for the intensity.

The grand finale game was Skid Row Ambassador (SlamBall) VS Sunblock with 2 special addition to their team Terrel Owens aka TO and Rashid Byrd aka 7Nsum Change from Sac Kings. Everyone came to play but way too much power for Sunblock… Stay tuned for video

Team Advantage became the #1 contender after they beat the champions last week and The Grinch is hungry for his throne since he hasn’t properly swallowed his loss VS Venice All Stars in the finals last year.

Sunblock VS Skid Row Ambassadors

Sunblock is coming from a tough loss VS The Mean Ones and are hungry for their first win. These college boys will find theirself a tough oponent with Crushow having recruited some more fearless players to add to his SlamBall crew.

The Venice All Stars will be having a bye this week and gather up the troops to get back on a winning streak after a poor oping performance.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE KIDS DON”T FORGET WE ARE AT THE KVBL FROM 8 to 12pm WITH THE OUR FUTURE LEADERS.

The Nash brothers and few players still not back from overseas so Gil and his crew took advantage of the situation to take down the Champions.

These two teams have an history of over time games and Sunblock is usually victorious but they changed the script on this one with Action Figure hitting the 3 for the WIN.

United Nations (1-0) VS Vic Battle Free Agents (0-1) 82-64

What a show that was with Prime hitting 7 dunks over everybody, Vic Battle and his squad had no match for the International superstars.

Kill The Hype (0-1) VS Hollywood Hoops (1-0) 70- 74

This game was down to the wire once again but Hollywood Hoops showed a bit more heart and intensity in the 4th quarter.

Team advantage is a new team in the VBL and is coming in for the #1 contender… Gil put a team of guys in their 30′s and 40′s who represent fundamental basketball at it’s best. Venice All Stars have been undefeated for 3 years in Venice and want to give them a nice and warm welcome.

The Mean Ones VS Sunblock

There has been a long tradition of over time games and rivalry between these two teams. This match up creates lots of controversy as one team is all good white guys and the other one is all black and mean.

Game 3- 3.30pm

United Nations VS Free Agents

Nick decided to split from Sunblock and create this new team that will showcase players from 7 different nations and The Free Agents are a mix of players that are all trying to make a name for themselves. This game should be interesting to see as it will be the first time all these players get together.

Game 4 – 4.45pm

Kill The Hype VS Hollywood Hoops

One game which has had lot of people talking. K Money split up from Hollywood Hoops to create his own team Kill The Hype where he put some of Long Beach finest players and America’s favorite streetball players. Kieran says he has much respect for Hollywizzle but it was his time to create his own franchise and show everyone what his crew was made of. You guys already know about the show wizzle and his crew put out..

What a game… It was down to the nitty griity, 45 sec to play, The Grinches are on a run and coming back to a 6 point deficit. Sick wit It kicks the ball to Special Delivery in the corner, Beast running down the court and S.D. throws him a high sharp pass. It looks like there was no way he could catch it as it was so high and off the rim but he stretched his body out and smashed that one. The Beast relly set the exclamation point with that one crushing The Mean Ones with their hope to win that game. The crowd went wild and that was a wrap…

The Champs… The undefeated Venice All-Stars

“The finals were simply amazing, a real spectacle… VBL is powerful, a must see for anyone who visits Los Angeles… a hoopers paradise and perfect place to showcase your talent (prime),real streetball, great games, love the music… the announcers are fantastic, I come every week with my family and stay for six hours.” These are just some of the things that people said to Nick Ansom and Jon Nash, Directors of the Venice Basketball League, this past weekend. And if you’ve ever been, you’d know why.

This past Sunday at the legendary courts of Venice Beach, the games were at their best. Here are some of the highlights:

Game 1: Ball Hogz (Brian McKnight’s team) vs. Free Agents – Was supposed to be an easy showcase game, but ended up being a tough battle won in overtime by McKnight and his crew. Air Dogg was out there hitting all his shots and got a few nice dunks.

Game 2: Sunblock (Ansom, Head & Shoulders, Prime, Flip, White Noise and David Kalb a.k.a. the guy who beat LeBron at H-O-R-S-E) vs. Hollywood Hoops (Bone Collector, Sidney Faison from Coach Carter, Slamball dunk champion Shakes, Hollywood a.k.a. The Painted Face, Ladies Man and Shakira (she can play) – This was the third place game and started really easy, as guys were simply entertaining the crowd, but the second half was played to win. It got very interesting with lots of Ansom-to-Prime combo alley oops that got the crowd clapping and screaming. A.C. Green picked Air Dogg and Prime as his MVPs to tryout for a 3BA contract.

Game 3: The Mean Ones vs. Venice All-Stars – We thought it would be a blow out as Zach Andrews had to move to Spain to start his pro season and the second tallest player was 6-3, but the Venice All-Stars are undefeated for a reason. Beast, a 6-7 power forward and Slamball superstar, Sick Wit It (AND1’s best passer on the West Coast), Jon Nash (6-6, 220 with spin moves) and his brother Male Model are Venice legends, along with 6-6 dunker Special Delivery, Jay “Boogie” Brantley (Cali legend), Inches (Slamball’s top scorer and star of a Nike commercial) are all good players, and are able to play well together. For the other squad, the Grinch played a good game and his whole team was really focused. They gave everything they had and left it all on the court. Up by seven in the third quarter, the Beast and Sick Wit It took over. It was a good battle to see as both teams are, for most part, from Venice and know each others game really well as they play pickup together everyday. Definitely a lot of mutual respect among them.

After a long season and some amazing basketball, Ansom and  Scooby Snacks don’t regret any of it. “We might have spent most of my money this summer and broken our whole body from the games played, but for some reason we feel really good about ourselves. We know it’s going to pay off.”

We started our camp with our usual warm up and light healthy breakfast.  Then, we went to our favorite part of the camp, YOGA!! From there we went thru few basic drills and fundamentals that we applyed into our KVBL tournament. After it got too hot, we went and jumped in the ocean which felt really refreshing. Cypes sang us a few songs and tought us a bit more about how to improve our environment. Once we came back to the courts,  we had some lunch while Omar the magician was entertaining the kids and adults with fantastic magic tricks…

Learn  information about nutrition and simple ways to be healthy…

Learn basketball techniques by some of the Best…

Do some yoga to keep them flexible and stay away from injuries

Have a nice walk on the beach and learn how to preserve our environment…
