Come join the Venice Basketball League (VBL) and Crep Protect on Sunday March 23rd for the inauguration of Watts Oasis, a new art-infused basketball court and garden in Watts, CA. Neighboring the Watts Towers, Watts Oasis incorporates mosaic artistry inspired by the work of the towers creator, Sam Rodia. Veniceball founder, Nick Ansom, had the vision to build a one of a kind mosaic basketball court, and brought together the dream team – Augustine Aguirre, longtime artist in residence with Watts Towers Arts Center, and Gonzalo Duran, creator of the Mosaic Tile House in Venice Beach, California. Watts activist and muralist, Robert Miller is also involved, supporting his life’s mission, “to turn Watts from a gang culture to an art culture”. The all-day inaugural event includes celebrity appearances and performances by artists like rapper Watts Stix and former Harlem Globetrotter Christon Staples. Community events will include a Venice Basketball League (VBL) celebrity all-star showdown, VBL dunk contest, KVBL youth basketball clinic, a final match up between local basketball stars and team LAPD, and planting a vegetable garden, contributed by Community Healing Gardens (CHG).
