Week 3 Recap – Mamadou throws a block party!

Week 3 started off with a great KVBL hosted by VBL great Van Girard and some of his kids from the palisades. The focus was on strength and conditioning with a lot of work in the sand and of course a solid hour of games!

Game1 between Sunblock and P4F which saw an all around performance from Brandon “The Mute” Field and highlight plays from Torrance Hampton. Torrance knows the court well as he graduated from KBVL after being in the program for eight years. Should we call him a vet yet? This was a back and forth battle all game long with 15 lead changes until late in the forth quarter when Donald Lee took over. He led P4F in scoring with 30 points to help his team stay undefeated with a 84-79 victory.

The game of the day was between 1 Percentage and Project Backboard which saw Mamadou Ndiaye having himself a block party. Mamadou Ndiaye did not play in last week blow out win so he wanted to make this weeks numbers count for 2 games! The game did not start the way Project Backboard might have hoped; the team committed 7 turnovers in the first half to find themselves down by 10 at the break. At the start of the second half 1 percentage push their lead to 18 points. After coming out of a time-out Project Backboard went on 18-0 run to tie the game with 5 minutes left in the 4th. Chris Staples knocked down three triples in the second half and finished the game with 26 points. Meanwhile Mamadou Ndiaye had 10 points and 14 blocks in Project Backboard’s come back win. The final score was 73-66.

In Game 3, we saw a close game between China Elite (CEB) and Pasadena Building. Buddha dominated with his all around physical game and led CEB with an impressive 20 points and 16 rebounds. JoJo Morgan and Michael Morrissey kept the Pasadena Building in the game with a combined 32 points . That said,  it was not enough to get the win against undefeated CEB. CEB finished the game on a 6-0 run to secure another victory. Final score 63-61. CEB remains undefeated in 2018!

In Another highly entertaining affair on center court of Venice Beach, Team Hub Select outlasted Team Undrafted 56-53 in game 4 of 5 in the Venice Basketball League on Sunday afternoon. Undrafted led by as many as 10 through the first two quarters but Hub Select mounted a massive second half run to steal one late. Hakeem led the way with 22 points with Mathew Young contributing 16 points and three steals for Hub Select. For Undrafted Ron Trapps was practically a one man wrecking crew as he led all scorers with 24 points. Despite two late game turnovers from Hub Select, Undrafted was unable to come up with the win.

In the final game of Week 3 action it was Team Clutch Pandas taking on Team Green Light in what was competitive in the beginning but later turned into a highlight filled second half domination. Metta World Peace entertained the crowd with his early appearance for team Clutch Pandas and had support from Young Mouth, who scored 28 points but struggled shooting from the field. However, it was Andy Cleaves who shined the brightest, scoring 37 big points, highest of the game. He scored in a myriad of ways and connected with KV and Jarrell “Bama” Tate for several high-flying dunks that delighted the crowd and propelled Team Green Light to an easy 78-64 win.

Stay tuned for more and see you next Sunday for week 4!
