Hops & Highlights: Sunday, June 24th & July 7th Recap

Competitions continued for the second “official” weekend of the VBL on June 24th out at the infamous beach where games between 3G’S vs. United Nations, South of the Border vs. Mean Ones, Mouth Offs vs. APL & Sunblock vs. White Collars. KVBL commenced and proved the future contenders of VBL are not to be taken lightly as they showed the WVBL a thing or two during the half time show.

3G’s remain undefeated as Deondre Lewis led his team in points against the United Nations team, scoring 24 of their 66 points. The Leprachaun went 3 for 5 from three-point range for United Nations with The Mute coming out with 18 points and 7 rebounds. The UN’s 35% shooting average just couldn’t hang with 3G’s Deondre Lewis and Skyscraper grabbing 24 rebounds (12 ea.) 3G’s took the W with a final scored of 66-45.

Another blow out came next with Mean One’s hitting 54% of their shots. The Mean One’s Frost led the team with 18 points and 13 rebounds while the Grinch proved consistent as usual with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. South of the Border’s Brandon was leading scored for the losing team with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Final score 65-42, Mean One’s with the win.

As the day got warmer so did the competition. Mouth Offs faced off against APL and remain undefeated with a 2-0 record after a close victory over APL 49-46. Tony MVP of Mouth Offs grabbed 10 rebounds & Travis aka Captain Swag led with 15 points. Sheldon “Juggernaut” led the game with 26 of APL’s 46 points and grabbed 11 boards but it just wasn’t quite enough to pull ahead of Mouth Offs as Mouthpiece’s team made off with a 3 point victory over Athletic Propulsion Labs.

Ending the day on a high note was Sunblock vs. White Collars. A close competition with 3 leading scorers tying with 14 points each. Sunblock’s Jay Hampton aka Go HAM Rookie may have to change his nickname as the rookie has led his team in scoring for the past two weekends and seems to be playing like a veteran. Aarone Awesome Bartender came down with 10 rebounds but Sunblock’s 33% team shooting average didn’t level out against White Collar. Nate Burunda aka CSI Miami & Giyoh Shey tied in scoring with 14 points each.

The following weekend Nick & a team of VBL elite were holding it down across the pond in Paris at the Quai 54 International Tournament. VBL’s global presence was felt with them advancing into the Semi Finals.

We were glad to have them back on the block this past Saturday for our Block Party at Oakwood Recreation Center off California Ave in Venice where Basketball Head barbecued, yours truly (DJ AK) provided the beats & street games were run into the evening.

We will be playing away at Dock Weiler Court this Sunday at 12pm as our home turf gets a makeover so come join the fun in the sun. We do it for the kids so make sure to show your support and stop by and say Hi to the future all- stars of the VBL this weekend Sunday, July 15th.

The game never stops whether indoor, outdoor, international or recreational VBL is always hoopin’ so bring your fly kicks & your A game and make sure to follow us on Twitter @Veniceball or like us on Facebook to stay up on the action.
